Floozies Pie Shop

Floozies Pie Shop on UrbanspoonJune 24, 2011 Some of the best pie I ever had.  That is how the discussion started.  I asked where the pie came from, and found out it was Floozies Pie Shop.  My affection for the strawberry-rhubarb pie in front of me started out simply.  I pulled out my droid x, and started searching.  I found out Floozies Pie Shop had not been around that long.  I made it a point right then and there, to make sure this establishment is on urbanspoon, and to make sure that I posted a review.  Now that they are on urbanspoon, you are reading my review.

First off, the Alphageek is not really a pie person.  I am not an expert, nor have I had a lot of pie.  It is not something I think much about.  That may have now changed, at least for a little while.  I took my first bite of my strawberry-rhubarb pie, and was taken to another place.  I had no idea that pie could taste this balanced.  I am used to overly sweet pie, that sort of tastes like that frozen pie filling in the grocery store. Floozies simply gave me a balance of fruit that amazed me.  The crust is light tasting, not overpowering, and somehow magically holds the pie together, until the last bite is on the plate.

I have also sampled some chocolate pie, some key lime pie as well as rain forest crunch.  They were made with the same care and deliciousness of the other piece of pie above.  Stop by and try a piece sometime.

You might want to call ahead at 540-967-1124, they are so new they are not on google maps yet, so I will try to get an update here when google maps figures this out.  Here is the best I can do for a map at this time.

Beach Fries

Beach Fries and So Much More on UrbanspoonJune 25, 2011 Beach Fries is a first for this web site.  Beach Fries is a food truck that travels the Fredericksburg, VA area, service their name sake food, along with some other sandwich items as well.  They post their location on their web site and also via twitter using the handle gotbeachfries where they will tell you any last minute updates.  We decided to check them out while they were located in Hurkamp Park, at the farmer's market on a Saturday morning.

This food truck is hard to miss. If you are looking for it, it is the big orange panel truck with Beach Fries painted on it.  We located the truck easily, and took a look at the menu.  As you can see in the picture below, they offer some grilled sandwiches, in addition to their signature beach fries.

We settled on some fries, a chicken sandwich with BBQ sauce, and an ear of deep fried corn.

Our items were ready in a few minutes, and we decided to enjoy an unplanned picnic right there in Hurkamp Park.

Let's jump right to their signature item: the fries.  The fries were delicious and obviously made to order, given how perfectly they were cooked.  We tried them the was I used to have them on the boardwalk, which is with a little malt vinegar.  The fries were great that way.  I found they actually stayed more crispy than the ones I remember eating so many years ago, which is a good thing,

We then tried the fried corn on the cob.  I don't think I have ever had corn on the cob deep fried before.  The deep frying takes the corn flavor and intensifies the flavor in a way that is simply amazing.  The corn almost tasted as if it had been sweetened.  The intensification of the flavors is simply something you must try sometime, if you have not ever had deep fried corn on the cob.

Finally, there is the chicken sandwich pictured below.  I was somewhat concerned when I tried to pick it up because the bun had become somewhat soggy, so maybe next time I will ask for the BBQ sauce on the side.  Did you catch that next time?  Yes, there will be a next time.  It was simply one of the best chicken sandwiches I have had in my recent memory.  It had super fresh ingredients.  I guess if you are serving food at the farmer's market, you had better get the tomatoes right there, and the tomato on the sandwich tasted like it had been picked that morning.

If you read this site much, you will know there is a lot of unhappiness with overcooked chicken served by various restaurants.  I am pleased to report that this chicken was perfectly cooked and seasoned!  It was almost a delicacy out of a truck and made the picnic a simple prize to cap off the morning.

I was so impressed with Beach Fries that I added their twitter stream to my twitter stream,

I can't post the usual map, so I recommend using the above links to either check out their web site, or follow them on twitter.
