I have been saying that I would update my web page for some time. I have been procrastinating for a while now. Hey, you reading this, when was the last time someone was honest enough to just admit they put something off? After all, you said you were going to read my web page a while ago, didn´t you? After all, the stats I collect on the web site indicate I have about five regular readers, and one of those is Mrs. Alphageek. I can tell when you regulars decide it is time to ¨catch up¨ with the Alphageek.

I am going to post some short thoughts here. I was going through old pictures and found some short posts that I want to make.

Today, we have a bottle of Blanton´s Single Barrel bourbon. I originally tried this bourbon thanks to my brother-in-law. He figured out that I like bourbon. He then did something innovative. He emailed a site and said ¨I know this guy that likes this bourbon. What other kind should I get him to try?¨ The result was this fine bourbon. I knew this was good stuff for three reasons. One, it comes in a bag. Two, it has a fancy stopper. Three, it is single barrel, which always seems to work for me. This is yet another great bourbon. (Note to the Alphageek, work on the description of great bourbon. You are getting repetitive.) This was one of the first ¨fancy¨ bourbons that I sampled, and it helped inspire me to try other bourbons out there.

This particular bottle was enjoyed slowly. So slowly, that I had to enjoy the last third rapidly. I am ashamed to say that the cork had begun to dry out! This made drinking the bourbon critical because the bourbon was evaporating. After enjoying, I took these fine pictures to share with you.

This is an easy one to write. Last Saturday, we attended the Virginia Tech-uva football game. It was a cool afternoon. The wahoos played hard, but Virginia Tech came away with the win. uva lost a chance to go to a bowl game and their coach was the ACC coach of the year last year. I can't remember the last time anything other than pride was on the line when we lost to uva in football.

The picture is of me feeling very smug after the game. I wished a couple of wahoos luck at their bowl game, but they did not think I was funny. The wahoos were very subdued after the game. They have two chants they like to use, that I call chant #1 and chant #2. One year, I got both chants from the same guy, but usually I hear the chants from different wahoos.

Chant #1: "Basketball, basketball".
Cahnt #2: "#1 at _________ (fill in the blank).

We swept the wahoos in men's bball last year, so #1 would have been funny. I think I heard a wahoo say "wait until that sport with the nets on the sticks comes, we will get those Hokies then."

About all I could find was a guy carrying a sign that looked like a six year old made it. He was quite proud of his sign and carried it out to the parking lot. Take a look at his sign here. I respected his effort so much, I had a Wild Turkey in his honor after the game.

Alphageek's New Computer

You might remember that I recently broke my trusty notebook computer. After Mrs. Alphageek and a camera, my old notebook pc was my most trusted traveling companion. It quickly became evident that I needed another pc and I needed the new pc quickly.

I happened to be in Wal-Mart and decided to glance at the notebook computers. I now think computing power in a notebook is not very important. After all, to write a blog, upload some pictures and update a facebook account does not really require much computing power at all.

I fell in love with a teeny weeny computer that Wally world had. It was made by Acer and cost $350. Mrs. Alphageek approved the purchase and we went to buy one. Unfortunately, Wally world was sold out. We asked if another store had one and we were directed to Salem. We stopped on the way home and I made the purchase.

I have been using this pc several weeks and I am favorably impressed. It has a great, but somewhat smallish display, several usb ports and a built in slot for camera memory, at least for one of my cameras. The other camera uses compact flash which still requires and external reader.

The pc comes with Windows XP Home, but other models come with linux. If you don't know what linux is, never mind because that is a geek thing.

The pc comes with bunch of crapware software, which I have removed and replace with reliable freeware. It also has a built in camera. I guess I could use that for chatting, but nobody ever chats with me using text, so video is probably asking for too much. The pc has proven to be quite reliable so far.

If you need a small pc, this model is looking like a good purchase. I give it a conditional approval. For permanent approval, it will take about six months.
